The non-governmental organization Women in Black held a vigil in mourning and silence at the in the main city square in Belgrade, marking the 27th anniversary of the crime in Srebrenica.
In addition to the large banner ‘Srebrenica – the Name of Genocide’, Women in Black activists also held a dozen smaller ones with the number 8,372 and three dots written on them, as well as the banners ‘Remove the mural of the war criminal Ratko Mladic!’ and ‘We remember!’ and other written messages.
During the rally the art collective Skart performed the stage action ‘Srebrenica – the Name of Genocide”.
There were no incidents at the rally which was secured by a cordon of uniformed police, as well as plainclothes police officers.
On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran the eastern Bosnian Srebrenica enclave and rounded up the town’s Muslim Bosniaks, separated men from women and little children and systematically executed over 8,000 men and boys.
In March 2010, the Serbian Parliament adopted the Declaration on Srebrenica, which condemned the crime committed against Bosniaks in July 1995, but, despite the verdicts of international courts, it did not qualify it as genocide.
