Urska Klakocar Zupancic, the President of the Slovenian Parliament, met with the mothers of the Association of Mothers’ Movement of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Zepa. The meeting was held ahead of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

Munira Subasic, the president of the association, said that Slovenia is a friendly country and thanked everyone for their support.

She mentioned that there are many activities planned for the upcoming anniversary commemoration in Srebrenica-Potocari, and that a large number of presidents of states, parliaments, and other high officials have announced their attendance.

“We only invited those who voted for the resolutions. We did not invite others. When they understand what justice and truth really mean — that they should stand not behind politics but behind their conscience and intelligence — then we will invite them,” Subasic said.

Talking about denial of the genocide, she said that those who deny are people “not at peace with themselves.”

“Hatred kills a person, and there is no cure for that. It is a disease that kills,” she emphasized.

Klakocar Zupancic said that everyone should always make time to meet with people who have endured so much evil, such as the mothers of Srebrenica.

“Actually, you need to make time for all those who can teach us so much in life, and the mothers of Srebrenica certainly do. Not only because they survived this tragedy, this horror, this genocide in Srebrenica, but primarily because they spread messages that are good, messages that should make this world a better place. For example, one of their main messages is that they managed to raise their children alone, because they were left without husbands, and also without sons; mostly they raised daughters and young boys, but they succeeded in raising them so that they do not feel anger, hatred, or hostility, and to make this world better. And that is what mothers can teach us. But I also want to emphasize that we must never forget what happened in Srebrenica. Not only because the court established that it was genocide, but primarily because it was an indescribable human suffering. Not only of the victims, but also of those who remained only because of the victims,” she said.

She pointed out that it is unforgivable that Europe was silent in 1995 when this was happening, and that Europe is silent now as well, as we witness genocide once again.

“We witness the genocide in Gaza every day, and Europe largely remains silent. I am extremely proud that the Republic of Slovenia is breaking the ice in this area and naming these acts with the right word — genocide. And that we are aware of the terrible weight that this word carries", she said.

"History will be the one to deliver judgment. The true court will say who belongs on the pillar of shame, and who on the pillar of honor — which I believe is also one of the projects that the mothers of Srebrenica are undertaking. And I congratulate them on that. But above all, I congratulate them for surviving. For not only surviving but living, raising their children, and now spreading good thoughts and awareness around the world. The world should listen to them, the world should listen to such people", she said.
