A memorial dedicated to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, called the “Srebrenica Flower,” will soon be erected at United Nations Square in Vienna. The initiative follows Austria’s parliamentary resolution recognizing the genocide on July 6, 2022, and is spearheaded by the Consilium Bosniacum, a federation of Bosnian associations in Austria.
According to project leader Damir Saracevic, the monument is meant to serve as a place of remembrance and a symbol of peace and empathy, regardless of nationality or background. The process of obtaining permissions and planning took nearly three years and involved support from the city of Vienna, its parliament, and even the United Nations.
The monument will be supported by pillars symbolizing the bravery and perseverance of the Mothers of Srebrenica. A public GoFundMe campaign was recently launched to allow individual contributions, even though several private companies offered to fully finance the project. The organizers chose a public campaign to encourage broader participation and ownership of this symbolic act of remembrance.
