Muslims across Bosnia and Herzegovina are celebrating Eid al-Adha or the ‘Festival of Sacrifice' on Saturday. The old heart of Sarajevo came alive this morning as worshippers filled its streets to celebrate the holiday. After performing the bajram-namaz (Eid prayer), many gathered in the city’s historic quarters to share their first cup of coffee with neighbors and relatives, embracing the spirit of togetherness and renewal that marks the holiday.

Smiling children filled the cobblestone alleys, clutching their small gifts of money and presents. Street vendors were out early, and business was brisk. Men bought flowers for their wives, mothers, and daughters.

The air in Bascarsija was rich with the aromas of paklama and freshly brewed coffee, mingling with the hum of conversation and laughter. The festive atmosphere reflected the deep-rooted customs that make Eid in Sarajevo a uniquely communal experience.

As tradition dictates, after the morning coffee, families head out to visit the elderly and those in need, before spending the rest of the day with loved ones—relatives, friends, and neighbors. It is also customary to wear new or finest clothing, a symbolic gesture of spiritual renewal.

A large number of faithful gathered at the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, where the central religious ceremony of the Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina was held. The prayer and hutba (sermon) were led by Husein ef. Kavazovic, the Grand Mufti (Reisul-ul-Ulema).

In his sermon, Grand Mufti Kavazovic delivered a poignant message that extended beyond the holiday's rituals:

“This is a moment to remember our noble ancestors, the Bosnian gazijas and shehids, and their deeds in defense of our homeland. Let us be brothers and friends to one another. Let us call for peace. I appeal to the reasonable people of the world: stop the bloodshed of innocent people, children, and the elderly", he said.

As Sarajevo awakened under the gentle light of Eid morning, its streets and courtyards echoed not only with tradition and joy, but also with calls for compassion and justice.
