Duchess of Edinburgh to attend commemoration marking 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide and deliver personal message from King Charles III

As part of her visit, the Duchess will be at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center on 11 July, where she will attend the official commemoration ceremony, lay wreaths at the cemetery in memory of the victims, and read a personal message from His Majesty King Charles III.

It is also planned that the Duchess will meet with the Mothers of Srebrenica, as well as with genocide and war survivors, once again reaffirming the United Kingdom’s longstanding support for the victims and for the truth about the events of 1995.

In addition, during her visit, the Duchess will hold talks with members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as with religious leaders and representatives of civil society, focusing on the legacy of the war, peace and reconciliation, 30 years after its end.

Special emphasis will be placed on the issue of missing persons and survivors of sexual violence. The Duchess will visit the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina to learn about their efforts to locate those who went missing during the war, regardless of entity lines. She will also speak with survivors of sexual violence, an issue the United Kingdom has been actively addressing for years through international initiatives and direct support for victims.

As part of her visit, the Duchess will also meet with the commander of NATO forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EUFOR commander, to thank them for their key role in maintaining peace and security in the country.

According to the announcement, this will be the Duchess of Edinburgh’s first visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The last member of the British royal family to visit BiH was Princess Anne in 2015, for the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
