The leader of the Croat Democratic Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) Dragan Covic told N1 that there is no possibility for the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, to impose a decision that would resolve the political crisis in the country. Covic stated that it appears “no one appointed Schmidt,” thereby indirectly supporting the position of the authorities in BiH’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity, who claim that Schmidt is a “fake” High Representative.

Speaking about the idea that Schmidt could use his Bonn Powers to resolve the crisis, Covic said that “there is no such possibility”.

“What are we even doing here then? Let them call Schmidt and have him appoint everyone. The country has laws and a Constitution. Let Schmidt pass the laws—what do we need elections, the Council of Ministers, or Parliament for?”, he said.

“We didn’t appoint Schmidt; he’s here to implement the Dayton Agreement? No one appointed him as far as I can see. That possibility to intervene doesn’t exist. We should all strive for BiH to be a normal state”, he added.

Covic argued that BiH cannot continue on its path toward EU membership if there are “governing structures that operate outside the Constitution”.

He also spoke about the opposition in the RS entity, saying: "When the opposition from Republika Srpska gains the ability to pass laws, then they can be our partners. We sat down with them and very quickly realized that it doesn’t work."
