The lower house of Bosnia's Federation (FBiH) entity Parliament adopted a draft law on rights of veterans and their families, meeting the demands of veterans who staged the protest in front of the parliament's building earlier on Thursday.

A proponent of the law amendments was a caucus composed of the left-leaning Democratic Front and Civic Alliance, who sent the proposal into a shortened parliamentary procedure.

After the initial vote, 37 MPs supported this procedure while 42 abstained from vote and eight were against it.

The vote outcome triggered fierce reactions among the veterans' representatives who were present in the session, but the law proposal was then returned to a regular procedure.

Hundreds of war veterans, former members of what was called the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s war, gathered Thursday morning in a protest, asking the lawmakers to adopt the law changes that would meet their three demands - a single registry of war veterans, cut the financing of veteran associations and to secure money for the veterans allowance.
