For the genocide and other crimes committed during the fall of Srebrenica on July 11, 1995, when over 8,000 Bosniaks were killed, a total of 54 individuals have been convicted by both international and domestic courts. Combined, they have received 781 years in prison and five life sentences.

Former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS), Ratko Mladic, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ICTY also handed down a life sentence in 2019 to Radovan Karadzic, the former president of the Republika Srpska (RS) entity.

In addition to Karadzic and Mladic, three other individuals were sentenced to life in prison by the Hague Tribunal for their roles in the Srebrenica genocide.

In 2010, former VRS Chief of Security Ljubisa Beara received a life sentence. He died in Berlin in 2017.

Zdravko Tolimir, former Assistant Commander for Intelligence and Security of the VRS General Staff, was sentenced in 2015 and died a year later.

Lieutenant Colonel Vujadin Popovic of the VRS Drina Corps was also sentenced to life for genocide, extermination, murder, and persecution of Bosniaks.

The ICTY first classified the Srebrenica massacre as genocide in a 2001 ruling that sentenced former VRS General Radislav Krstic to 35 years in prison for aiding and abetting genocide. In 2024, Krstic penned a handwritten letter publicly acknowledging the genocide committed against Bosniaks in Srebrenica.

Other VRS officers received lengthy sentences, including Drago Nikolic (35 years), Dragan Obrenovic (17 years), Momir Nikolic (20 years), Radivoje Miletic (18 years), and Ljubomir Borovcanin (17 years).

Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic, top Serbian state security officials during the 1990s, were convicted in 2023 for participating in a joint criminal enterprise that included the 1995 killing of six Bosniak civilians from Srebrenica in Trnovo.

Drazen Erdemovic, a member of the 10th Sabotage Detachment, was the first person to plead guilty before the Hague Tribunal for executing captured Bosniaks. Arrested in Serbia in 1996, he was sentenced that same year to five years in prison. His testimony later played a key role in the conviction of Ratko Mladic.

Over the past year, no verdicts have been issued in Bosnia and Herzegovina related to Srebrenica crimes, while proceedings in Serbia remain painfully slow.

In Potocari, a funeral prayer will be held on Friday for seven more genocide victims, whose remains were identified and will now be laid to rest with dignity. Among those buried are two young men, Avdic Senajid and Mujic Hariz, both born in 1976 and just 19 years old at the time of their murder. Their remains were discovered in mass graves that had been relocated in an attempt to hide evidence of the crime.

Also buried today were Bektic Fata (1928), the oldest victim laid to rest this year, Omerovic Hasib (1961), Alic Sejdalija (1961), Gabeljic Rifet (1964), and Mujcic Amir (1964).
