BiH Presidency member Denis Becirovic met at the US Congress on Thursday with the distinguished congressman Michael Turner from the state of Ohio, Anadolu Agency reported.
During the conversation, Becirovic stressed the importance of America’s strong involvement in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He pointed out that the strong US support for Bosnia's entry into NATO and the European Union is a guarantee for peace and security in the region.
the two agreed that the new geopolitical circumstances dictate the need for a new and decisive engagement of the West towards Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.
Becirovic stated that sanctions against certain politicians in BiH are not the happiest solution, but that they are necessary in cases when individuals, such as Republika Srpska (RS) entity President Milorad Dodik, threaten the foundations of the Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia.
He added that it is better to sanction irresponsible individuals than to allow them to threaten the peace process.
Becirovic thanked for the previous support and assistance to Bosnia’s reform efforts on the way to Euro-Atlantic integration, the fight against corruption, and the establishment of the rule of law.
He expressed expectations for the continuation of the US’ proactive role and support in the implementation of reforms that are crucial for the functionality and stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Congressman Turner, together with Senator McCain, is the most deserving member of Congress for the admission of Montenegro to NATO.
He served as mayor of the city of Dayton and is a member of the Friends of Bosnia and Herzegovina Caucus at the American Congress.
