The attempt was uncovered during routine surveillance of the state border when officers stopped two passenger vehicles bearing Bosnian registration plates, both driven by citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the agency confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
Shortly before the vehicles were brought to a halt, the foreign nationals spotted police patrols and fled into adjacent woodland. Following a search across difficult, rugged terrain, officers located and identified the group as citizens of the Republic of Turkey, comprising 15 adults and 13 minors.
Upon notification of suspected human smuggling, the duty prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina instructed officers to question both drivers as criminal suspects. Vehicles, mobile phones, cash, and other relevant items were temporarily seized as evidence.
A formal report charging the two Bosnian nationals with human smuggling will be submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH. The Service for Foreigners’ Affairs was also alerted, and all 28 Turkish citizens have since been transferred to its custody alongside a proposal for their expulsion from Bosnia.
