The food product Sarajevski ćevapi/Sarajevski ćevapčići has already been registered with a protected designation of origin at the national level. Following this, and in accordance with the provisions of the Rulebook on Quality Systems for Food Products, the conditions were met to submit an application for the registration of the protected designation of origin at the European Union level.
The procedure is initiated by submitting a request to the Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which then forwards it to the European Commission, the agency announced on Thursday.
“Sarajevski cevapi”/“Sarajevski cevapcici” are produced in a limited territorial area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which includes the administrative area of the Sarajevo Canton, and their protection is based on their reputation and long-standing production tradition.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently the first country in the EU accession process from the region to have a food product entered in the register of geographical indications (Livno cheese), while two other food products are still in the process of registration of their geographical indications (Extra Virgin Olive Oil of Herzegovina and Gacko Kaymak from Mjesina).
The Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina will provide all necessary professional and technical support to the Association of Sarajevo Cevapi Makers in their efforts to register the geographical designation of origin for the food product “Sarajevski cevapi”/“Sarajevski cevapcici” at the European Union level.
