On the occasion of the second anniversary of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Bosnia Presidency member Denis Becirovic reiterated his support for the Ukraine's struggle for freedom, condemning Russia's violation of international law and calling for an end to the invasion of the sovereign and independent state of Ukraine.

“The Russian Federation's aggression against independent and sovereign Ukraine has been going on for two years now. For two full years, I have supported Ukraine's right to self-defense, that is, its right to defend its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is extremely important for Bosnia and Herzegovina to stand ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with the countries of the free world in condemning the open Russian aggression against the independent state of Ukraine, a full member of the United Nations (UN),” said Becirovic, the Bosniak member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency.

He also stressed as “very important” Bosnia's joining other democratic countries and diplomatic actions, showing solidarity with Ukraine and condemning the Russian Federation for disobeying international law.

Becirovic emphasised as “positive fact” that in 2023 Bosnia and Herzegovina fully harmonised its foreign policy with the EU's common foreign and security policy on this matter.

“The State of Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to insist on respecting the basic principles of international law contained in the UN Charter, the Declaration from 1970 and other relevant international treaties, which regulate the fundamental rights and duties of states in international relations,” Becirovic underlined.

In the end he said that the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the changed geopolitical circumstances “clearly determine that the accelerated integration of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina into the EU and NATO is the most effective way to prevent the destabilisation of the Western Balkan region.”

“In this context, it is of great importance that the European Council makes a decision in March this year on the opening of negotiations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EU,” he added.
