Bosnian citizen arrested for smuggling 12 migrants near Gradiska

Officers of the Gradiska Unit of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina arrested a Bosnian national on Saturday after discovering he was smuggling 12 individuals of Afro-Asian origin, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The smuggling attempt was uncovered during routine surveillance of the state border in the Gradiska area. The suspect was stopped while driving a Mercedes passenger vehicle with Bosnian license plates, which was found to be transporting migrants.

The on-duty prosecutor from the BiH Prosecutor’s Office was immediately notified due to suspicion that the crime of "smuggling of persons" had been committed. Acting on the prosecutor’s order, the driver was taken into custody, and evidentiary materials were temporarily seized.

According to initial interviews conducted with the migrants, they claimed to be nationals of Syria and Palestine.

The Service for Foreigners’ Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina was also informed of the case. The smuggled migrants were handed over to the Service along with a recommendation for deportation from the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. near
