Households across Bosnia and Herzegovina are facing a sharpened squeeze on their finances as consumer price inflation accelerated significantly in March. Official data released by the Agency for Statistics of BiH reveals that the cost of living rose by an average of 1.7% in a single month, driven largely by a double-digit spike in transport costs.

The monthly jump was characterized by broad-based increases across almost every major spending category. Most notably, the transport sector saw a staggering 12.6% rise, placing immediate pressure on commuters and logistics. Beyond the forecourt, high street prices also ticked upwards, with clothing and footwear growing by 1.8%, while the cost of alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose by 0.9%.

Basic necessities offered little relief to consumers, as housing and utility bills increased by 0.8% compared to February. Smaller upticks were also noted in health, education, and the hospitality sector, with restaurant and hotel prices rising by 0.3%.

Annual inflation hits 5.1% despite high street deflation

The long-term outlook remains challenging, with the annual inflation rate hitting 5.1% in March 2026 compared to the same period last year. The data underscores a persistent inflationary trend, particularly within essential services. Housing and utilities have jumped by 9.4% over the past twelve months, while health services are now 6.3% more expensive.

The hospitality and food sectors have also seen significant annual shifts:

  • Restaurants and Hotels: Up 6.5%
  • Alcohol and Tobacco: Up 4.1%
  • Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages: Up 3.3%

In a rare glimmer of hope for bargain hunters, the clothing and footwear division provided the only downward movement in the annual figures, with prices retreating by an average of 6.3%. However, this deflationary trend in fashion was overshadowed by the 11.1% annual surge in transport, leaving the average Bosnian household to navigate an increasingly expensive economic landscape.
