Bosnian K9 team highlights progress and ambition at Beijing search and rescue world cup

The event, held between 15 and 22 September, convened elite teams from across the globe for intensive competitions, professional training, and expert knowledge exchange. Participants faced complex disaster simulations, including the aftermath of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake near Beijing. The realistic scenarios featured collapsed residential structures, landslide-blocked roadways, and hazardous factory sites where dogs were required to operate independently at significant distances from their handlers.

For the Vogosca unit, the event served as a crucial benchmark against countries with decades of specialized development in emergency response.

"We came here above all to learn. We saw different approaches to the work, highly prepared scenarios, and met people with extensive experience in this field. We saw where we are strong, but also where we have room to improve," Sekulic remarked, noting that lessons gathered in Beijing will be integrated into local operational training.

The department highlighted that the experience fostered international connections, opening pathways for future joint training initiatives and professional exchanges. It also underscored the necessity of sustained investment in search-and-rescue teams, which require years of continuous preparation, specialized facilities, and regular readiness assessments.

Reflecting on the mission, Sekulic emphasized that gaining practical insight at the highest level outweighed competitive rankings. The team now returns to active duty to further advance the capabilities of the Vogosca Fire Department's K9 unit.
