An informal group of citizens launched a campaign on social media to draw attention to the rising prices of essential groceries, as well as other goods and services.
Those calling for the boycott are urging citizens to reduce their daily shopping, purchase only essential groceries, and completely refrain from shopping today, January 31.
The boycott of stores is supported by almost everyone – citizens, consumer associations, trade unions, some politicians, and the Institution of the Ombudsman for Consumer Protection has also backed the initiative.
Ombudsman Sasa Maric hopes that this action will be the first step towards awakening consumer awareness.
According to him, consumers must be aware that their money is important and a priority for all retailers and that retailers should justify consumer trust with a different approach to consumers and profitability.
As reported by N1 journalists, there are some shoppers, but significantly fewer in almost all shopping centers in Sarajevo.
The president of the Consumer Association "Potrosac" from Kakanj, Ferida Kulovic, stated for Fena that the association supports the boycott, adding that the responsibility ultimately lies with the local authorities, who have the mechanisms to stop price increases.
The boycott campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina is modeled after similar actions organized in the region.
A similar action was carried out last week in Croatia. According to data from the Croatian Tax Administration, on the day of the boycott, January 24, there was an almost 50% drop in turnover in grocery stores, and a decline was recorded in other sectors as well.
The action resulted in the decision of the Croatian government to publish a list of 70 products with price limits, and retailers announced price reductions for a large number of products.
