In an interview with N1 about the events in Gaza, Brown University professor Omer Bartov says that the rest can be interpreted as ethnic cleansing on the way to genocide. The Holocaust and Genocide Studies professor also analyzes the rules of proportionality, potential war crimes, Benjamin Netanyahu's position, and media warfare and propaganda as part of this war.
N1: Professor, there is a lot of talk about genocide, genocide is mentioned throughout this war. Is there a legal possibility to assess this as genocide or an action with genocidal intent?
PROF. BARTOV: I have been talking about this since this operation began, and I would say the following. There have been statements, statements by Israeli political and military leaders over time, that have indicated or appeared to indicate genocidal intent. The IDF itself has consistently claimed, whether we believe them or not, that what they are trying to do is avoid civilian casualties. As I said, they haven't done that very well, and their goal is to destroy Hamas as a military and as a political opponent. So, there is a kind of contradiction between some of the statements made by political leaders and what the IDF claims to be doing. I would say that at this point the evidence is not clear on that. I assess that what we are seeing now has the potential to become ethnic cleansing or may be ethnic cleansing to the extent that a large part of the population, in fact, the majority of the population, are displaced. I think that so far 1.8 or 1.9 million people have been displaced out of about 2.3 million in total, that the northern part of the Gaza Strip has been largely destroyed, and that Israel has not committed to allowing those people who are carried out for so-called humanitarian reasons. Their complete removal from Gaza is now being talked about in various channels connected to the government. Ethnic cleansing in the past turned into genocide that happened, several genocides, well-known genocides in the past. And while I think that currently what is happening cannot be called genocide, the direction is very alarming. The sooner the military operation is stopped and the whole situation is turned around to indicate what the political goals are and how they will be implemented, if this does not happen soon, we may be, as we have been for several weeks now, on the verge of genocide.
