Numerous events will be held in several cities of Great Britain this week on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, the Anadolu agency reported Tuesday.

One of the events was held Tuesday at Newcastle Cathedral, ahead of a commemoration which will be held outside Newcastle city centre on July 10.

There will also be a memorial service on the evening of July 11 in the city of Sunderland.

Durham City Council and Durham University will mark the anniversary by raising the flags of Remembering Srebrenica, a UK-based organisation, on several key buildings. The flag will fly in the City Hall throughout the week, but also on many university buildings.

Count Alan Shield, Durham City Council's Cabinet Member for Equality and Inclusion, said some still deny the Srebrenica genocide 27 years on.

“Failure to deal with the past has led to even more pain and suffering for the surviving victims of the genocide, who have already experienced the worst of humanity. That is why it is imperative that we never forget the horrors of 1995 and that we continue to work together to reaffirm our commitment to the fight against prejudice and discrimination,” Shield said on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

Also, on July 8, a commemoration will be held in front of the City Office in the city of Portsmouth for all those who were killed in the genocide in Srebrenica in 1995.

As announced by Portsmouth City Council, BiH flags will be raised during the commemoration at Guildhall Square.

Dr Waqar Azmi, chairman of the organisation “Remembering Srebrenica”, said that he was proud that numerous activities are being held in Great Britain to mark the 27th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

This year, 50 victims of the genocide committed against Bosniaks in July 1995 in Srebrenica will be buried in the cemetery of the Srebrenica Memorial Center – Potocari.
