The Court of BiH confirmed the indictment against five people who stand accused of trying to cover up the truth behind the suspicious 2016 death of 21-year-old Dzenan Memic in Sarajevo.

The five suspects are Zijad Mutap and his daughter, Alisa Ramic, who was Memic’s girlfriend at the time of his death, Hasan Dupovac, Zijad Baric, police officers who allegedly obstructed the investigation by mishandling evidence and witness statements, and Muamer Ozegovic, an employee of a hotel who allegedly erased a video from a security camera that could have served as evidence.

The indictment was filed to the BiH Court on July 9.

All suspects have meanwhile been released from pretrial detention.

Prosecutors say that, in the period of February 8, 2016, and onwards, the suspects joined an organised crime group, formed by Zijad Mutap and others, which worked to conceal evidence on how Memic received the severe bodily injuries in Sarajevo’s Ilidza neighbourhood, which led to his death on February 15 that year.

The case of Dzenan Memic sparked several large protests in Sarajevo throughout the past several years as the father and sister of the young man, Muriz and Arijana Memic, have been accusing judicial officials of protecting the person who killed him.
