Day of mourning in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Brcko District for tragically deceased mountaineers

The tragic event took place on July 25, 2026, when a five-member group of mountaineers from Bosnia and Herzegovina perished due to extreme weather conditions during their ascent of Europe's highest peak. To express condolences and solidarity with the families of the victims, the authorities designated July 28 as a day of mourning within the entity and district.

Observance of the day of mourning requires lowering the flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina to half-mast on the buildings of legislative, executive, and judicial authorities, as well as on facilities of public institutions and other legal entities. Additionally, cultural and entertainment programs on public places are prohibited, and media outlets operating within the affected regions are required to adjust their programming accordingly.

Bosnian mountaineering community was struck by this disaster on Saturday, July 25, when five climbers from Zenica died during the expedition on Mount Elbrus. Out of seven expedition members who set out toward the summit, only two climbers survived, identified as Haris Adilovic and Kemal Vidimlic.

The victims who lost their lives in this unprecedented accident are Meliha Causevic, Alma Okanovic, Denis Okanovic, Almir Krivdic, and Nermin Talam. Among those who perished were two members of the Mountain Rescue Service Zenica, while the other three belonged to the local Mountaineering Association Vedro.
