Thousands of Bosnians, as well as tourists, gathered in downtown Sarajevo on New Year's Eve to see the popular band Dubioza kolektiv perform, and according to the band’s manager, the event was not only successful but showed that BiH’s capital is “truly a European city”.
Some 25,000 people gathered at the Eternal Flame in Sarajevo’s centre to welcome the new year.
Other than being highly successful, Dubioza kolektiv is also perceived as a highly influential band because of their socially and politically conscious lyrics, often targeting right-wing politics.
This is why some, such as Party of Democratic Action (SDA) representative in the Sarajevo Canton Assembly, Haris Zahiragic, saw their performance as controversial.
He complained that the “overpaid” performance shows the “defeatism that is continuously spreading systemically, for the sake of a fake revolution that they are carrying out with Money from the budget and Europe”.
The manager of the band, Biljana Bilic, would not comment on this.
“We are happy and proud of Sarajevo, which, even on New Year's Eve, confirmed that it is truly a European city. We leave the political interpretations of the organizational quality to the politicians, and we wish the citizens a year of peace, health and well-being”, she told N1.
