Two members of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency asked the international administrator of the country, High Representative Christian Schmidt, to use his powers and enable the utilisation of BiH Armed Forces resources for responding to the wildfires which are active in several parts of the country.

Firefighters have been struggling to put a series of wildfires across BiH under control throughout the past week, especially in the southern area of Jablanica, where the fire is meanwhile spreading towards neighbourhoods from inaccessible terrain.

Local authorities have asked the BiH Armed Forces to send helicopters to help extinguish the wildfire, but this was reportedly blocked by the Serb member of BiH’s Presidency, Milorad Dodik.

An agreement between all three Presidency members is necessary in order to engage the BiH Armed Forces.

The other two Presidency members, Sefik Dzaferovic and Zeljko Komsic, discussed the issue on Monday and decided to ask Schmidt, who is tasked with overseeing the civilian implementation of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement in the country, for help.

“The Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina calls on the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina to get involved in resolving the new situation regarding firefighting in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to use his authority and powers to enable the use of the aircraft, either military or civilian, at the disposal of Bosnia and Herzegovina and to enable its urgent engagement in all situations that require it,” the Presidency said.
