Elvir Klempic, originally from Bosnia, was appointed senior adviser to US President Joe Biden for the relationship between the White House and American Muslim communities.
Mazen Basrawi, a senior adviser to US President Joe Biden, announced the end of his term as White House liaison to American Muslim communities earlier this year and he will be replaced by Klempic, who was recently the liaison representative with the White House for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Middle East Eye wrote.
News of Basrawi's departure came just over a year after he was appointed in April 2023, as part of Biden's fulfilment of a campaign promise to restore the position that former President Donald Trump had abolished.
Klempic is originally from the area of Vlasenica. He became known to the wider BiH public a few years ago when it was announced that he was on Joe Biden's election staff, and now he has been appointed to a new position. As a four-year-old, he survived the genocide in Srebrenica and, together with his family, later sought refuge in the US.
“I left Potočari on a truck with my mother and grandmother. In 1995, I was four years old. Father crossed the forest. We waited for him in Tuzla, and later we lived in Banovici as refugees”, Klempic told the media earlier.
He lived in Banovići until 2001, after which he moved with his family to the state of Iowa.
