Soil surrounding the industrial zone in Zenica remains heavily contaminated with heavy metals despite the suspension of integrated production at the local steelworks, according to findings from the EcoTrace project presented by Eco Forum Zenica.

The research was conducted by the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Agropedological Institute, which performed systematic soil sampling and analysis across the settlements of Tetovo, Podbrezje, Banlozi, Gradisce, Ricice, and Crkvice. Samples were collected three months after Nova Zeljezara Zenica halted production, allowing for a direct comparison with baseline data gathered by the institute in 2010 when the facility operated at full capacity.

Project associate Sanja Mladjenovic-Stevic noted that the tested soil exhibits alarming concentrations of pollutants, placing it formally into the fourth contamination class. While concentrations of lead, zinc, and cadmium have decreased compared to historical levels, analysts observed a drastic increase in nickel and chromium, with levels doubling in certain samples. Experts warned that the contaminated soil presents a serious risk to the local food chain, necessitating caution and adherence to expert recommendations among residents.

Additional testing and analysis will be conducted at two specific settlement locations due to elevated pollutant concentrations. Conversely, the project identified a positive outcome at a site where phytoremediation had been implemented, with biologist and external expert Irena Jonjic confirming that planting clover successfully reduced all heavy metal concentrations below prescribed regulatory limits.

Project manager Daut Bajramovic highlighted that the research replicated the exact methodology and locations used 16 years prior to evaluate environmental shifts under changed industrial conditions. While Amer Alic, president of the Tetovo Local Community, pointed out that the production halt marks a significant change after 130 years of industrial activity, project organizers confirmed that comprehensive conclusions and action recommendations have been compiled for authorities and residents across the affected areas.
