The High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, sent a letter to the top leadership of the Republika Srpska (RS) entity, on Wednesday, in which he warned that the celebration of the RS Day on January 9 is unconstitutional and does not symbolize multi-ethnicity.
According to Srpskainfo web portal, the letter was sent to the RS President, Milorad Dodik, RS Prime Minister Radovan Viskovic, and the National Assembly Speaker, Nenad Stevandic.
“I am writing to you on the occasion of the announced celebration of the Day of the Republika Srpska, January 9. In a series of decisions, the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina determined that the declaration of January 9 as the Day of the Republika Srpska was unconstitutional. These decisions are final and binding and must be respected. All public bodies and all public officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina have the obligation to adhere to the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, Schmidt stated in his letter.
Last month Schmidt sent a similar letter to RS authorities in which he said that the BiH Constitutional Court underlined in its decision that “the selection of 9 January as the day observing the Day of the Republic does not symbolize collective, shared remembrance contributing to strengthening the collective identity as values of particular significance in a multi-ethnic society based on the respect for diversity as the basic values of a modern democratic society.”
