Homes saved as Rujiste wildfire continues, firefighting aircraft redirected to Konjic
The wildfire at Rujiste near Mostar remains active but is currently under a degree of control, although strong winds and difficult terrain continue to complicate firefighting efforts, the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Civil Protection Headquarters said.
Spokesperson Pero Pavlovic told FENA that residential and commercial buildings had been successfully protected from the advancing flames.
According to the canton Civil Protection Operational Centre, the fire is still active, but firefighters on the ground have managed to defend threatened properties.
An Air Tractor firefighting aircraft operated over the area during the day, assisting crews where possible.
Pavlovic warned that changing weather conditions make it difficult to predict how the situation will develop later in the day and overnight.
He added that another major wildfire is currently burning in the wider Konjic area, prompting authorities to redirect both available Air Tractor aircraft to support firefighting operations there.
The aircraft are collecting water near Sarajevo before carrying out water drops over the Konjic fire zone in an effort to bring the blaze under control.
