Iran launched a large-scale missile attack against Israel on Tuesday, reportedly firing around 180 missiles, according to Israeli and Iranian sources. So far, there have been no confirmed casualties.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) provided an initial estimate that around 180 “projectiles” were fired from Iran. “At this moment, we understand it was approximately 180 projectiles,” an IDF spokesperson told CNN, adding that this was a preliminary figure.
The Iranian Mission to the United Nations confirmed that the missile barrage was a response to recent Israeli actions. “Iran’s legal, rational, and legitimate response to the terrorist acts of the Zionist regime—which involved targeting Iranian nationals and interests and infringing upon the national sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran—has been duly carried out,” the mission said in a statement posted on X. The mission further warned that if Israel should “dare to respond or commit further acts of malevolence, a subsequent and crushing response will ensue.” It also urged regional states and Israel’s supporters to distance themselves from the regime.
Iran’s strike was reportedly in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other figures, as stated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). “In response to the martyrdom of Martyr Haniyeh, Seyed Hassan Nasrallah and Martyr Nilfroshan, we targeted the heart of the occupied territories,” the IRGC said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. The IRGC emphasized that Israel would face “crushing attacks” if it chose to retaliate.
The IRGC also detailed that its aerospace forces had “targeted important military and security targets by launching dozens of ballistic missiles” at Israel, noting that the operation was supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran Army and the Ministry of Defense. Further details of the attack, the IRGC added, would be provided later.
In response, the U.S. has positioned military assets in the region, including missile-intercepting destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean, a carrier strike group in the Arabian Sea, and fighter jet squadrons. However, it remains unclear how many missiles were intercepted by U.S. forces.
Israel, meanwhile, has vowed to respond to the attack. “This attack will have consequences,” Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, a spokesperson for the IDF, said. “We have plans, and we will operate at the place and time we decide.”
