Israel's non-resident Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Galit Peleg, addressed recent speculation regarding the potential cancellation of a planned event commemorating the victims of the October 7th attacks in Israel. Speaking to N1, Peleg stated that the event might not be cancelled, emphasizing that at least "50% of the victims in Gaza are Hamas fighters," referring to the group as a "terrorist organization."

When questioned about the event, Peleg responded, “I’m not sure that the reception has been cancelled. Unfortunately, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country I love working in, but there are politicians driven by hate and division who apply pressure, particularly on the country's EU accession path.” She expressed her willingness to continue strengthening bilateral relations between Israel and Bosnia and said she was ready to work with anyone “willing to engage in respectful dialogue, rather than antisemitism.”

Peleg clarified that the event is not directed against anyone, stating, “This event is to honour the victims of the October 7th massacre. I don’t understand how someone can question my right to pay tribute to those who were killed.”

She also questioned the motivations of any politician opposing the commemoration. “If there are politicians who believe Israel should not mark October 7th, then their motives must be questioned. I represent the state of Israel and its citizens, and I want to remember the citizens who were killed on that day. If some in Bosnia think it’s inappropriate to remember them, then it’s a matter for your country to resolve and for the international community to examine.”

Addressing the conflict in Gaza, Peleg reiterated that Israel's issue is not with the Palestinian people, but with Hamas. “We have made it clear many times that our problem is with Hamas, not the Palestinian people. Even Gaza’s citizens acknowledge that Hamas is bad for them. Hamas is not leading the Palestinians anywhere.”

Peleg stressed that Israel has two objectives in Gaza: “One is to free the hostages, and the other is to ensure Hamas does not retain control over Gaza. If Hamas continues to control Gaza, then October 7th will happen again.”

Regarding casualties in Gaza, Peleg asserted that “at least 50% of the victims are Hamas fighters who were fighting our soldiers. Let Hamas stop hiding behind civilians.” She also addressed the loss of civilian lives, but pointed to Hamas’ leadership, saying, “Hamas leaders openly admit that they are willing to sacrifice civilians for their mission. That’s why Israel is fighting in Gaza.”
