Italian speleologist rescued from deep cave near Nevesinje following leg injury

The Mountain Rescue Service of Bosnia and Herzegovina received an alert from the European Cave Rescue Association at 08:30 am, reporting that an expedition member had fallen five meters and sustained a left leg injury, leaving her immobilized underground. Italian specialists from the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico, who were participating in the expedition, administered initial first aid inside the extensive cavern system, which features over 4,100 meters of explored passages.

Thirty rescuers from the Bosnian mountain service deployed to the site, reaching the injured caver located an hour and a half away from the entrance. Working alongside the Italian specialists, the rescue teams hauled and carried the casualty out of the subterranean network. The operation concluded at 4 pm when she was transferred to the Nevesinje emergency medical service for further care.

The rescue organization emphasized that the successful outcome validates their strategic investment in specialized subterranean rescue capabilities, noting they remain the only service in the country equipped for such operations. The mission also involved coordination with local speleologists, the Nevesinje Police Station, and regional medical staff.
