Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konakovic, declared that Milorad Dodik’s Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) has exhausted its credibility as a partner, stating that Troika will not engage in any collaboration with them at the state level.

“For Troika, the SNSD is no longer a partner. They have been erased because they have lost all credibility,” Konakovic said.

He noted that during the first year of this mandate, SNSD had been a reliable partner, citing the adoption of seven EU-related laws and progress with Brussels. However, since March, Konakovic accused Dodik of halting Bosnia’s EU integration under influence from Russia, harming citizens and the economy of Republika Srpska (RS).

“By blocking Bosnia’s EU path, Dodik damages RS’s economy and limits access to a powerful market. Instead, he speaks of economic ties with BRICS countries, which account for only 5% of our trade,” Konakovic added.

Dodik’s credibility in question

Konakovic alleged that Dodik misled coalition partners.

“He promised Covic, Niksic, and me during meetings in Banja Luka and Mostar that certain laws would pass, yet later they blocked them. This reveals his true intentions,” he said.

Bosnia’s Foreign Minister praised the RS opposition for prioritising the welfare of RS citizens by supporting pro-EU laws.

Shifting political alliances

Konakovic revealed that Dodik’s actions led to internal discussions within Trojka about excluding SNSD from power. He also mentioned that the Democratic Action Party (SDA) recently attempted to form a new majority with SNSD, which included plans to remove him from office.

“SDA tried to save Dodik, but their efforts failed. This shows there are people ready to work for a European future, even if they differ on key historical and political issues,” Konakovic said.

Future strategy

Konakovic emphasised that Bosnia’s EU path depends on the swift adoption of two remaining laws on the judiciary. He warned that SNSD is likely to block these in the House of Peoples, which would expose their agenda to international partners.

“Dodik is acting on instructions from Moscow to derail Bosnia’s EU integration. Any future coalition must include pro-European parties. If SDA is willing to commit to this, even without the People and Justice (NiP) party, I would support it,” he stated.

Konakovic concluded by calling for pragmatic solutions and stressed that Bosnia risks being left behind if it fails to seize this momentum for EU integration.
