Leaders across Bosnia offer support after Tuzla retirement home tragedy

Bosnia and Herzegovina is united in grief following the devastating fire that swept through the Tuzla retirement home, claiming at least eleven lives and leaving around thirty people hospitalized at the University Clinical Center Tuzla. Officials across different levels of government expressed condolences and pledged assistance to the affected families and the city of Tuzla.

Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Nihad UK, conveyed his sympathy to the victims’ families, stating that the Sarajevo Canton Government and Assembly “express deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic event that occurred in Tuzla.”

“In these painful moments, the thoughts and compassion of the citizens of Sarajevo Canton are with the families and friends of the victims, as well as with all citizens of Tuzla,” the statement read. UK added that all available accommodation, medical, and logistical capacities of the Canton are at Tuzla’s disposal. “We are all Tuzlans tonight. Let this be a moment of unity and support for the families who have lost their loved ones. On behalf of myself and the Government of Sarajevo Canton, I extend my sincere condolences,” he wrote.

Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdic also sent a condolence telegram, saying that “Tuzla, and indeed all of Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with its capital, are shrouded in sorrow and disbelief after the news of the tragedy that struck the retirement home.”

He offered heartfelt sympathy to Tuzla’s mayor Zijad Lugavic and all its citizens, expressing readiness to provide any assistance needed. “We appeal to the competent institutions to swiftly and transparently determine the circumstances that led to this tragedy, ensuring justice for all victims and their families. I also extend my deepest gratitude to the brave members of the emergency services, firefighters, police, and medical staff,” Avdic said.

Savo Minic, Prime Minister of Republika Srpska entity, likewise expressed condolences and offered help to the people of Tuzla. “The Government of Republika Srpska stands ready to provide any form of assistance after this tragedy. We share the pain and are always prepared to help. My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased,” Minic stated.

As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, the tragedy has sparked a wave of national solidarity, with leaders across Bosnia and Herzegovina calling for compassion, coordination, and unity in the face of one of the country’s most painful recent disasters.
