The central commemoration marking the 28th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica will be held Tuesday, at Lancaster House in London.

The host is Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and the United Nations in the Office of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development of the United Kingdom.

BiH Presidency member Denis Becirovic is also expected to take part along with many ambassadors, high commissioners, politicians, religious leaders and representatives of the Bosnian community who survived the genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The national commemoration is one of hundreds of memorial events in the UK during Srebrenica Remembrance Week from 4 to 11 July. Communities from across the country will come together in a collective act of remembrance in schools, local government seats, police stations, workplaces and places of worship.

Great Britain is the largest commemorator in the world when it comes to activities commemorating the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, organized by the British charity Remembering Srebrenica UK through its eight English regional committees and three national committees in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with huge support from the Bosnian community in that country.

“We are proud that our country is the largest commemorator in the world when it comes to memorial activities in memory of Srebrenica. It not only seeks to bring people together to learn lessons from the past and create more inclusive communities, but inspires future generations to take action and oppose hatred and intolerance,” Waqar Azmi, the chairman of Remembering Srebrenica, said.

“This year's theme for Srebrenica Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom, ‘Together We Are One,’ is particularly important because we are not only coming together to honor the memory of the victims of Srebrenica, but also to remember Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine and highlight the little-known fact that Russia is helping and in the destabilization of Bosnia and Herzegovina and supports the denial of genocide and the glorification of those people who committed genocide,” he said.
