Exactly 30 years ago today, the Old Bridge in Mostar was demolished. The symbol of the city on the Neretva was destroyed by artillery fire from members of the Croat Defense Council (HVO).
On this occasion, a jump from the Old Bridge was held without applause with the citizens of Mostar present in order to preserve the memory of this barbaric act during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Likewise, Mostar Memorial & Museum presents a previously unseen video of this criminal act perpetrated by members of the Croatian Army (HV) and the Croat Defense Council (HVO) from Hum Hill.
“We are bringing you exclusive footage that we bought from HV soldiers,” said the Mostar Memorial & Museum on their social networks.
Namely, the recording was allegedly kept by Slobodan Praljak, an HVO former general, who was convicted at the International Court of War Crimes.
The shelling of the Old Bridge began 20 days earlier and intensified on November 8, 1993.
An entire street with shops called Kujundziluk has completely disappeared. Shells intensively demolished the bridge part by part for two days in a row. At 10:16 am on November 9, Mimar Hajrudin's masterpiece collapsed and fell into the Neretva River.
The restoration of the Old Bridge, financed by Turkey, Croatia, Italy, the Netherlands, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and the City of Mostar, began in 2003.
