The Institute for Research of Genocide Canada (IGC) reported that the proclamation aligns with the recent United Nations General Assembly resolution that declares July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance for the Srebrenica Genocide.

According to the IGC, the significance of this proclamation lies in Premier Holt’s recognition of multiple key references: rulings by international courts that define the events in Srebrenica as genocide; Canada’s 2010 parliamentary resolution establishing July 11 as a national remembrance day; legislation mandating the inclusion of Srebrenica genocide education and commemoration each April; the permanent exhibit at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg; and Canadian law that criminalizes genocide denial.

The IGC expressed its gratitude to Premier Holt, noting that this is the seventh such proclamation made in Canada this year.

Canada’s central commemoration of the 30th anniversary will take place on July 5 in Windsor, Ontario, at the site of the first monument in the diaspora dedicated to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
