Professor John O’Brennan from Maynooth University in Ireland has warned of growing threats to the Western Balkans, highlighting transactional deals between Donald Trump’s associates and regional leaders such as Milorad Dodik in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Aleksandar Vucic in Serbia. Speaking to N1, O’Brennan cautioned that a second Trump administration represents a deeply corrupt enterprise intent on disrupting EU expansion to avoid rule-of-law obligations.

He cited controversial regional property deals, including Jared Kushner’s development plans for the former General Staff building in Belgrade, as evidence of backroom politics undermining democratic standards. O'Brennan expressed severe concern over Brussels' weak response to such corruption, warning that European silence only emboldens bad actors.

Beyond US influence, the Maynooth professor identified the rise of European far-right partie, particularly Marine Le Pen in France, as the single greatest threat to Western Balkan integration, noting France could force a blocking referendum on new entries. Conversely, he dismissed Croatia's recent conditions on Montenegro as a minor hurdle, maintaining that Montenegro remains on a realistic trajectory to join the EU by 2028, offering the bloc a much-needed geopolitical success.
