Police apprehended a 69-year-old man in the northern Bosnian town of Prnjavor on Saturday after he allegedly shot at Miladin Stanic, an opposition MP in the National Assembly of Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity.
Stanic suffered a minor injury to the finger of his right hand, which he claims was caused by the bullet.
According to police, the reason behind the shooting was a spat between Stanic and the suspect over an unresolved property issue concerning a local road.
Stanic, a member of the Serb Democratic Party (SDS), said the police statement is wrong and that the reason was political.
He said the shooter is a member of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), the ruling party in the RS.
“The man, a member of the SNSD, said after they won (the election) that he can do whatever he wants. Police gave false information. I don’t trust the police or the system,” he told N1.
“My finger was hit. I will go to the hospital, and I’ll see whether I’ll give a statement to the police. I don’t trust them, but I will give a statement to the Prosecutor’s Office,” he said.
The SNSD said in a statement that the shooting has nothing to do with politics and condemned his statement, arguing that the spat between Stanic and the shooter, who the party said was his cousin, was over property issues which the SDS MP is now trying to portray as political.
The SDS condemned the incident and called upon police and prosecutors to investigate the case and prosecute the perpetrator as soon as possible.
