In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the Mayor of Ottawa, Mark Sutcliffe, has officially declared July 11, 2025, as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day in Canada's capital city.

"By remembering the genocide in Srebrenica, we commit to defending truth, justice, the culture of remembrance, and the human dignity of victims, both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and worldwide," stated the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada (IGC). "We will continue to strengthen institutional remembrance and confront genocide denial, historical revisionism, and the glorification of convicted war criminals. This is not only about the past, but an investment in our shared future."

The IGC also urged Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ambassador to Canada to treat the proclamation as a call to honour decisions by Canada’s Parliament and Bosnia’s institutions, including lowering the national flag at the embassy in Ottawa to half-mast on July 11.

Canada has long acknowledged the Srebrenica genocide. In 2010, its Parliament unanimously passed Resolution M-416, recognising the genocide and designating July 11 as a national Remembrance Day. In 2024, Canada co-sponsored the UN General Assembly resolution establishing July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance for the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

The IGC, a Canadian public research institution focused on genocide and crimes against humanity, has also declared the period from June 11 to July 11, 2025, as a month of remembrance.

Mayor Sutcliffe’s proclamation emphasises the importance of institutional memory in building a safer future and ensuring justice and truth for all.
