Sarajevo city council grants “Honorary Citizen” titles to US lawmakers and professor

According to the Council’s explanation, during his term in office, Congressman Mike Turner repeatedly reminded international audiences that Sarajevo, as the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, holds a symbolism that transcends national borders; it stands as proof that a multiethnic city can survive war and once again become a model of coexistence.

Turner also underscored the role of Dayton, not only as the site where the historic peace agreement was signed, but as a city that opened its institutions, community, and identity to the idea that peace can be a universal value rather than merely a diplomatic act.

Congressman Matt Joseph has been a long-standing friend of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has continuously worked on strengthening institutional cooperation between Dayton and Sarajevo, which are officially twin cities.

The award to Professor Dr David Pettigrew, an American university scholar, recognises his contribution to truth and justice regarding the events in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly his efforts to preserve the memory of the victims of genocide and other war crimes, as well as his advocacy for the removal of symbols that glorify convicted war criminals.

Senator Cynthia Jeanne Shaheen has consistently demonstrated her commitment to strengthening US–Bosnia and Herzegovina relations and supporting the country’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Her unwavering advocacy for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and prosperity makes her one of the most significant and enduring allies of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the U.S. political scene.

City Council Chairman Alen Girt announced that the “Honorary Citizen of the City of Sarajevo” recognitions for Congressmen Mike Turner and Matt Joseph, Senator Shaheen, and Professor Pettigrew will be officially presented on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Statehood Day, November 25.
