Sarajevo maintains stable water supply but Ministry warns of drought

Authorities stressed that ongoing cooperation from the local population has played a vital role in preventing shortages. "Through careful consumption and by avoiding the unnecessary waste of water, citizens are making a significant contribution to preserving the stability of the system," the Ministry stated, calling for sustained caution as an unusually dry September is forecasted to increase strain on network inflows. Citizens are urged to maintain responsible consumption habits, particularly regarding the watering of gardens, lawns, and other high-volume daily activities.

To secure long-term reliability, the canton continues to invest heavily in modernising its vast infrastructure. Officials noted that the extensive water and sewage network spans more than 1,500 kilometres, with significant portions suffering from age-related damage and leakage.

Ongoing rehabilitation efforts implemented in partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are currently approaching their final stages, while discussions with international financial institutions aim to secure additional funding for further grid repairs.

"Through a responsible attitude toward water consumption, each of us makes our own contribution to preserving available water quantities and the stability of the system. The goal is to do everything possible to ensure that citizens and the economy have a safe and continuous water supply in the coming period, without the need for restrictions," the Ministry emphasised.

Officials concluded that safeguarding the continuous flow of water relies on a combination of civic responsibility, the dedicated operational work of the local public utility company, and sustained institutional investments in the distribution network.
