After walking for days along the escape route through the woods the Srebrenica men once took, participants of the Peace March arrived Sunday evening in Potocari to attend Monday’s funeral of those who did not survive that journey in 1995 and became victims of the Srebrenica genocide.

Immediately upon arrival, the participants paid tribute to all the victims buried at the Potocari memorial.

The Peace March is organised as part of the commemoration of the anniversary of the genocide against the Bosniaks in the “United Nations Safe Zone” of Srebrenica, and for the survivors of what is considered the worst crime committed on European soil since WWII.

It takes place in July every year with the goal to nurture the culture of remembrance of the genocide against the Bosniaks and fight against genocide denial and revisionism.

The Peace March was included in the program to commemorate the anniversary of the genocide in 2005, and the number of participants has been increasing every year. With the exception of the past two years due to the coronavirus pandemic, between 2,000 to 10,000 participants from BiH and many world countries participated in the march throughout recent years.

The march lasts three days as participants walk about a hundred kilometres from Nezuk to Potocari.

This is the path Bosniaks trying to escape from Srebrenica took in 1995, only in the opposite direction. Many of them were killed by Serb forces.
