Nenad Stevandic, Speaker of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska (RSNA), stated on Friday that repealing the laws imposed by High Representative Christian Schmidt could resolve the ongoing crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Speaking to reporters in Banja Luka, Stevandic emphasized that such a move would restore peace and reduce tensions both along the inter-entity boundary line and in cities across BiH.
Stevandic expressed his willingness to compromise, saying he would reconsider the three laws recently adopted by the National Assembly if Schmidt's laws were withdrawn. “I would be ready to ask [Republika Srpska President Milorad] Dodik and [Prime Minister Radovan] Viskovic to reconsider and find a compromise regarding the constitutionality of these three laws,” he said.
He added that he is prepared to face criticism from all sides in the interest of preserving peace. “I feel responsible for peace in BiH. We need to send a message to the people in the Federation of BiH that they have overstepped, but also that they have been manipulated,” Stevandic stated.
He dismissed the notion that Republika Srpska could give in, saying, “I don’t understand how anyone could think that Republika Srpska could give in.”
Stevandic also criticized opposition members, accusing them of creating a false image in Sarajevo as an alternative to the current leadership. “They are not an alternative,” he concluded.
