Suljagic rejects RS tax evasion allegations, warning against police intrusion into genocide archives

Srebrenica Memorial Centre Director Emir Suljagic has claimed that he and his staff successfully thwarted a planned raid by masked special police units at the institution, while warning that such an attempt remains possible following upcoming elections. Speaking to N1 following the release of an official document from the District Public Prosecutor's Office in Bijeljina confirming an investigation into alleged 2022 tax evasion, Suljagic insisted that the probe is an attempt to exert political control over the Centre, its archives, and its narrative of the genocide.

"We know they would not come here in civilian clothes, in a civilian car with two inspectors; they would come with armoured vehicles, they would come with masked special forces," Suljagic stated. He asserted that the intention of the Republika Srpska authorities was to display political power ahead of elections. "They were supposed to come here and demonstrate power, not over this place, not even over us, but over these graves. That is the struggle we are waging."
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska (RS) entity previously denied plans to arrest Suljagic or deploy special anti-terrorist forces, maintaining that officers are acting under prosecutorial supervision.
Addressing the tax evasion allegations, Suljagic rejected the charges, explaining that payroll taxes and contributions are processed directly by state officials. "We don’t even calculate our own taxes," he noted, adding that any inquiries should be directed to the Ministry of Finance and Treasury of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While expressing willingness to allow inspectors from the Tax Administration of Republika Srpska to conduct a legitimate audit, he strongly opposed police intervention inside the institution.
"You will not come here under the pretext of tax evasion and dig through the archive," Suljagic warned, expressing concern over preserving sensitive witness statements and Hague tribunal documents. "So that next time, having set a precedent, they come here, rummage through our exhibitions, and dictate what we are allowed to say, how we are allowed to say it, and how far we can go in telling our story. That will not happen."
Suljagic also criticised domestic political and business circles for insufficient financial backing, pointing out that global Bosniak donations reached 500,000 Bosnian marks (approximately €255,600) this year, whereas international donors provided major funding. Concluding the interview, he affirmed that the Centre remains undeterred by threats of detention or prosecution. "We are a mortal threat to the Greater Serbia nationalist narrative because it is grounded in lies," Suljagic declared. "There is no way to intimidate us. We follow no one in Sarajevo, nor anyone anywhere on the planet; we follow these people (the dead) resting here."
