The United Nations General Assembly has officially established an Outreach Programme on the Genocide in Srebrenica and the United Nations, aiming to enhance collective memory and education about the genocide committed in July 1995.

As part of this initiative, the UN published the first edition of a dedicated newsletter, offering an overview of international activities, educational efforts, and commemorative events held to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

Through the adoption of the relevant resolution earlier this year, the General Assembly formally recognised the Srebrenica genocide as a historical event of international significance and a permanent subject of global commemoration. The resolution unequivocally condemns genocide denial and calls on member states to preserve established historical facts through public policies and educational systems.

A key focus of the Outreach Programme is preventing genocide denial, distortion of facts, and minimisation of crimes. It also aims to educate younger generations about the dangers of hate, dehumanisation, and extreme nationalism.

Mandate and objectives

The UN Outreach Programme on the Genocide in Srebrenica has a multifaceted mandate, including support for organizing the annual International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica (July 11), promoting genocide education in schools, universities, and public institutions, and producing educational content, exhibitions, and documentaries in partnership with local and international organizations.

The newly released newsletter includes a visual and thematic overview of recent commemorations, academic forums, public discussions, and memorial events held in New York, Geneva, Sarajevo, and other cities.

Through this initiative, the United Nations reinforces the message that crimes such as the genocide in Srebrenica must not be forgotten, relativised, or denied, but rather remain a lasting warning to humanity.
