The US Embassy in Sarajevo has sharply criticised the Russian Embassy's recent statement regarding energy security in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), describing it as both a threat and an attempt to justify the potential fragmentation of BiH along ethnic lines. The US Embassy’s response highlighted the continued malign influence of Russia in the region, drawing parallels to Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
In its statement, the US Embassy underscored that this is not the first instance of Russian threats directed at BiH. According to the embassy, these threats reveal Russia’s fear of losing its monopoly over BiH’s gas supply and the corresponding leverage it uses for political and economic coercion. The US Embassy thanked Russia for making its intentions clear to the citizens of BiH and exposing the true nature of its so-called “friendship” with the country.
The US Embassy called on the Federation of BiH’s government and parliament to protect the country's energy security and independence by adopting the Law on the Southern Interconnection. This law, which passed the Federation House of Representatives in December 2021, would enable a critical energy project to move forward. The project, which has been delayed for three years due to alleged obstruction by a single individual, promises economic benefits for all residents of the Federation, particularly in Herzegovina.
“The choice is theirs,” the statement said, warning that history will judge harshly those who prioritise Russian interests over the well-being of BiH’s citizens.
Reaffirming its stance, the US Embassy reiterated its commitment to the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and multiethnic character of BiH, as well as the country’s integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions. The statement emphasised that advancing energy independence is a key step toward reducing external influence and ensuring a stable, prosperous future for all citizens of BiH.
