Vjetrenica Cave has been officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, as announced today during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi.

Vjetrenica was among 27 nominated sites and has now been recognized for its cultural and natural significance.

Estimated to be around five million years old, Vjetrenica is a natural gem first opened to the public in 1964. However, it was closed for over 18 years starting in 1991. Located in the Municipality of Ravno, at the western end of Popovo Polje, the cave sits at an altitude of 260 meters. It is considered one of the most beautiful and important speleological sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina, rich in water with four main watercourses and numerous smaller periodic streams and underground lakes, including the 180-meter-long Great Lake, the Deep Lake with a maximum depth of four meters, and the Small Lake.

The cave was first mentioned in the mid-first century in the work “Natural History.”

Other sites from Bosnia and Herzegovina on the UNESCO list include the Old Bridge in Mostar and the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's ambassador to India, Haris Hrle, who attended the session, told N1 that the announcement was met with significant applause.
