The American magazine Forbes published a list of the most underrated cities to visit in the Balkans, and the Bosnian city of Doboj was on it. N1 visited Doboj in order to see the tourist potential it offers and how it uses it correctly.
From the moment Doboj found itself on the said list it recorded a significant rise in the number of tourists. There is no lack of interest in this city, and the tourist offer is not negligible.
“This positive assessment of the tourism potential of the Doboj region gives us, the city of Doboj, even greater motivation to work as hard as possible to promote our potential: Gradina and the lake, the four magnificent mountains that surround Doboj, Ozren, Trebava, Knin and Vucijak, and the rural households located there and the extremely rich offer they provide,” said Sandra Pijunovic from the Tourist Organization Doboj.
The medieval fortress Gradina, a symbol and jewel of the city of Doboj, is located in the valley around the confluence of Usora in Bosnia. It was built on a conical elevation above the city itself and its silhouette also represents a contemporary feature of the city.
“Today, the Gradina fortress is a protected cultural and historical monument of high value, but also the most striking tourist destination. It’s also included in the list of national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fortress is a meeting place of the past, present and future and it represents the identity of every Doboj resident and great cultural wealth,” Dragana Tomanic from the Doboj Tourist Organization said.
At the foot of the Ozren mountain, some 7 kilometres from Doboj, there is the Goransko Lake, which is surrounded by a coniferous forest. Nature lovers, walkers, cyclists and hikers love to visit this lake. It is especially visited during the summer months when the number of tourists comes to the fore.
“There’s a lot of content here. There is also a large parking lot for vehicles, places for camping, a stage for organizing various concerts, and a beach volleyball court. In the summer months, there is also a restaurant with a rich and varied offer of food and beverages. The Josava trail starts from Goransko lake, which connects the tourist potential of the lake with the adrenaline park that opened this year, then with the tourist potential of the Preslica picnic area, all the cyclists and hikers visit those trails throughout the year. This oasis of peace is their favourite trail,” Tomanic added.
It is also important to mention the religious buildings that the Doboj Fortress houses. All religious buildings, Orthodox and Catholic churches, mosques and synagogues are located just a few hundred meters away from each other, in one street.
Behind the Catholic church, there is also a regional museum that houses antiques from Doboj and the surrounding area. It is important to single out the National Library which has been renovated, the Public enterprise Center for Culture, the famous narrow-gauge locomotive Ciro, which reminds visitors of times when locomotives used to run here because Doboj is known as a traffic and railway junction, there is also a monument with its historical story in the city park.
The tourist organization of the city of Doboj has more than 30 events in its events calendar. And it is certain that, in addition to Doboj, which Forbes mentioned, Bosnia and Herzegovina hides other destinations that world travellers should visit as well.
