Svjetski dan okeana se nezvanično obilježava od 1992. godine, kada je to predloženo na samitu “Planete Zemlje” održanom u Riju de Žaneiru. Međutim Ujedinjene nacije su praznik tek zvanično priznale 2008. godine. Ove godine se slavi pod temom “Naši okeani, naša budućnost” i koncentriše se na zagađivanje okeana plastikom.
