The air quality in parts of the Sarajevo Canton reached critical levels ono Thursday morning, prompting urgent warnings from health officials. According to data released by the Cantonal Public Health Institute, which cites the FBiH Hydrometeorological Institute, air pollution is classified as extremely polluted in the areas of Otoka and Bjelave. The air quality in Vogosca is marked as very polluted, while other parts of the capital are simply designated as polluted.

For the areas facing the highest contamination, the concentration of PM 2.5 particles, tiny pollutants considered especially harmful to health, is reported to range between 55.6 and 64.1. These measurements significantly exceed safe limits, contributing to the poor overall quality.

Authorities strongly advise residents against spending time outdoors, with the recommendation being particularly critical for sensitive populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. The excessive pollution is a regular seasonal challenge for the city, primarily driven by meteorological conditions and emissions.

Further underscoring the severity of the crisis, the global air quality monitoring service AirQuality has ranked Sarajevo as the 19th most polluted major city in the world this morning. This high ranking serves as a stark reminder of the persistent environmental challenges facing the capital. Residents are urged to follow official health advisories and minimize outdoor exposure until the air quality improves.
