BiH Presidency Chair Denis Becirovic and BiH Presidency member Zeljko Komsic met with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres the day before the vote on the Resolution on July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995. This was the second joint meeting in a little more than a month. The meeting was also attended by the BiH Ambassador to the UN, Zlatko Lagumdzija.

Becirovic and Komsic thanked the UN Secretary-General António Guterres for his previous support for activities and measures in the fight against genocide denial and hate speech in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Becirovic said that it is important that the UN General Assembly adopts the resolution on Thursday, thus preserving the credibility of the UN.

“It is an important civilizational step for truth and justice. The Resolution has historical importance because in this way the international community sends a clear message that it will not put up with genocide and the ideology of genocide denial,” Becirovic said.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that it is crystal clear to the UN that genocide was committed in Srebrenica, which was confirmed by final verdicts of the UN's highest courts, and no one can dispute that.

During the conversation, it was stated that building a future of peace requires confronting the past. Genocide prevention is a fundamental priority, they agreed.

Becirovic expressed special respect for those who will support the Resolution on Srebrenica and emphasized that its adoption will lead to true reconciliation and the building of lasting peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.
