Bosnian awarded filmmaker Jasmila Zbanic paid respects to the Srebrenica genocide victims on July 11, the day of the genocide anniversary, warning that on this very day the nationalists will screen the film about convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic.
“This year new found bodies of men from Srebrenica will be buried. Even after 27 years mothers of Srebrenica are still searching for the remains of their sons, husbands, fathers & brothers buried in hidden mass graves of Republika Srpska (Bosnia's Serb-majority part),” Zbanic wrote on Facebook, adding that this is also the day when the Serb nationalist will, as announced, screen a film glorifying Ratko Mladic.
Weeks prior to the Srebrenica genocide commemoration, a nationalist association has announced the screening of a film about what they named the “liberation of Srebrenica” and about war criminal Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb military leader who was among other crimes convicted for genocide. The screening is set to take place only a few kilometres away from the commemoration site.
The film about Mladic was previously screened in the eastern Bosnian town Bratunac last June, the night before his verdict was announced in The Hague.
The move was condemned by the Srebrenica genocide survivors and the families of the victims, and now by Zbanic, the author of the multi-award winning film ‘Quo Vadis, Aida?’, which describes the Srebrenica story through the life of a UN translator and her family.
